Urgent maternity symptoms

If your waters break, you have vaginal bleeding, your baby is moving less than usual, or you think labour is starting before 37 weeks, contact your maternity team the same day. For severe symptoms, collapse, or an imminent birth, go to the nearest emergency department; do not wait for a WhatsApp reply.

Why patients choose this care

Warm, evidence-based support at every step

Understand your birth choices

Discuss vaginal birth, pain relief, and the circumstances in which an assisted birth or C-section may be recommended. Your questions and preferences belong in that conversation.

Painless delivery, explained honestly

An epidural can substantially reduce labour pain, but it does not guarantee zero pain or a particular birth outcome. Benefits, limits and side effects are explained before the big day, not during it.

Natural-birth-first support

Preparation for normal (vaginal) birth and VBAC counselling after a previous caesarean, with C-section discussed when medically needed, never presented as a default or a failure.

Questions about this care

Frequently asked questions

Is painless normal delivery possible? Will I still feel anything?
An epidural can provide effective pain relief during vaginal birth, but results vary and it may need adjustment. Pressure or some discomfort can remain. Tell the team about pain rather than assuming you must tolerate it.
Is epidural pain relief safe for my baby?
Epidurals are widely used in maternity care. Your team checks suitability and monitors you and your baby; changes such as a fall in maternal blood pressure may need treatment. Discuss your individual concerns with the anaesthetist rather than relying on an assurance of zero risk.
Does an epidural cause a C-section or make labour faster?
Having an epidural does not mean a C-section is inevitable. Labour duration varies, and no pain-relief method guarantees a quicker birth. The pushing stage may be affected, so your team will guide you as labour progresses.
Is a C-section less painful than normal delivery?
Pain occurs at different stages. Anaesthesia is used during a C-section, but recovery involves an abdominal operation and postoperative discomfort. Vaginal birth involves labour pain, for which relief is available, and recovery also varies. Choose a birth plan through an individual risk-and-benefit discussion, not a pain ranking.
Can I request an epidural during labour, and what is the injection called?
You can ask the team about epidural labour analgesia. It usually involves medicines given through a catheter, rather than one universal painless delivery injection. Availability, your assessment, and the time remaining before birth affect what can be arranged.
Can I have an epidural after a previous C-section?
Epidural pain relief can be considered during a planned vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC). VBAC suitability and the risk related to the uterine scar require separate counselling and appropriate hospital monitoring. Review your previous operation records with your obstetrician; pain relief does not remove scar-related risks.
Can I walk, eat, or drink after an epidural?
Movement depends on leg strength, the medicines used, monitoring, and hospital policy. Do not stand without staff clearance. Ask your maternity and anaesthesia teams for individual eating and drinking instructions; do not follow a universal fasting rule from a website.
Does an epidural cause permanent back pain, or can it fail?
The insertion area can be sore temporarily, but an epidural has not been shown to cause permanent back pain. Pain relief can be incomplete and may need adjustment or an alternative approach. Rare serious complications should be covered in your anaesthetic discussion.
